Much to be proud of, much work to be done
I’m sure that many of us are still feeling all the feelings about the presidential outcome, but we did amazing work this year – we built on our previous successes here in WA state, and the results show in the many races we won here at home.
- Both our House and our Senate in Washington State are now 60% Democrat
- Initiative 2117 – Our Climate Commitment Act stands
- Initiative 2109 – Our capital gains tax for our kids (childcare, education) etc. stands
- Intitiative 2124 – State Long Term Care Insurance stands
Kim Schrier and and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez retained their seats in the house. Congressional district 6 elected Emily Randall as the first out LGBTQ+ person to represent Washington State in Congress, and the first LGBTQ+ Latina in Congress.
Across the USA, there were many important downballot and national wins. Here are a few:
- Abortion measures were won in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota which will save lives
- Tammi Baldwin (WI) and Elisa Slotkin (MI) won their Senate races
- For the first time, the U.S. Senate will have two Black women – Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware
- Sarah McBride of Delaware made history as the first out transgender member of Congress
Actions to take now
Some of us are activated and motivated, while others are not ready to jump right back into the fray, and that’s OK. The choir keeps on singing when one of us needs to take a breath. We still have power, and that power lies in the community we’ve built over the last eight years, and in the new and returning members who joined us at our last community meeting. Grassroots organizing was key to resisting Trump before and it will be again. Trump won’t be president until January, and we need to make the most of Biden’s remaining term and make clear-eyed preparations for the future.

Tell our Senators, Confirm pro-Democracy Judges Now!
Congress is reconvening for the final session of the year and Senate Democrats only have a few more weeks in the majority. With another Trump presidency and a Republican-controlled Senate looming, Democrats must make the most of this time and do everything in their power to safeguard our democracy and our rights. That’s why they must prioritize confirming pro-democracy judges in the final session. President Biden has nominated a slate of diverse, highly qualified candidates to federal judgeships. The Senate has confirmed over 200 of these judges, but there are 32 more nominations still pending – and that number could grow before Biden leaves office. Confirmations can be slow because there are a number of procedural hoops to jump through in the Senate – but with determination and long hours, Democrats can get this done. According to the American Constitution Society, 17 nominees are ready for floor votes right now!
This form from Indivisible National makes it easy to email our senators, or you can call their offices.
