Medicaid Rally After-Action Report and April 5th Rally Plans

Thank you for making the Save Medicaid (Apple Health) Rally a Success

We had a great group out on the streets for our Save Medicaid sign-wave, and we got to hear from Representative Schrier. Thanks to everyone who participated in the sign making party and the rally!

Meeting with Kim

Indivisible WA8 members haven’t met with Rep. Schrier or her staff in years. That changed last week – seven of us met in person with Rep. Schrier and her staff on March 19.

Our group thanked Kim for her strong message at the Save Medicaid Rally that morning in Issaquah – that she will “fight like hell” against cuts to Medicaid so billionaires like Elon Musk can get richer. We also thanked her for speaking out against RFK Jr’s nomination and for voting No on the Republicans’ budget.

We stressed, however, that these are different times – times that call for courage.

Trump 2.0 is a five-alarm fire. The federal government programs that Musk-Trump are burning down and the costs (literally) of Trump’s trade wars are non-partisan. People in CD8 are being hurt on both sides of the Cascades, whether they are Democrats, Independents or Republicans. More and more people are angry. They see Musk and Trump’s destruction.

They need to see that their Congresswoman is fighting.

We stressed the need to raise the alarm now, while there is still time, and shared ways other Democratic members of Congress are doing just that. We have outlined a number of specific ways Rep. Schrier can raise the alarm (gathering and sharing stories from constituents, holding press conferences and news events, working with other House Dems to hold informal hearings, and more).

Rep. Schrier is in DC. She sees what Musk and Trump are doing. Our question to her: “Who better than our Congresswoman to explain to constituents the danger ahead?” We also explained that Trump’s push for mass deportation, the crackdown on undocumented immigrants and aggressive tactics from ICE agents have people and whole communities living in fear. Immigrants are not seeking medical care for themselves or their children. Native Americans, the original inhabitants of these lands, are fearful of being mistaken for undocumented immigrants (and cases of this are documented).

We have asked to work with her office to reach all corners of the 8th about the harms being done to the people and communities of our District and to share what she is doing to fight back. We have asked for regular meetings with her staff, and to work with her in advance the next time an immigration bill comes up.

We will continue to follow up on all of these issues.
