We are not helpless
As the new administration begins, it is important to remember that we are not helpless. Power in America is shared among local, state, and federal offices, and activists have shaped the direction of government policy at all of these levels. It will take commitment and work, but we have done it before and we can do it again.
Or, as Ezra recently reminded us:
While MAGA controls the federal government, their coalition is fragile, their leaders are malevolent muppets, and their agenda is deeply unpopular — and we still live in a representative democracy that depends on the consent of the governed. Democracy is undeniably diminished, but MAGA is not all powerful. We can save lives, prevent damage, slow their assault, and ultimately fracture their coalition while building our own.
That doesn’t mean we’ll all be ok. But it does mean we have something to hope for and work toward.
We know Trump is following in the well-trodden steps of authoritarians before him — aiming to silence his critics and undermine his political opposition. It’s more important than ever that independent, grassroots groups like Indivisible are prepared to lead the fight against Trump 2.0.
Thank you for being part of this work!
If you need a pep-talk from Leah and Ezra to get through this week, there are two more “Brace for Impact” briefings scheduled for this Thursday and next.
Tell Kim Schrier: Vote NO on Laken Riley Act
The Democrats in the House have one more chance to find their spines and stop cooperating with Trump’s mass detention and deportation plans. The Laken Riley Act is as dangerous, cruel, and chaotic as it comes. (Even ICE doesn’t want to have to prioritize detaining shoplifters over detaining truly dangerous people!)
This bill has passed the Senate (with amendments that Indivisible National characterizes as making it even worse!) and is going back to House for a vote on the amended version. Last time it came up for a vote, Schrier was one of 48 Democrats who voted along with all 216 Republicans to pass the bill. 159 Demos voted Nay.
They want to put this on a glide path to passing, so call ASAP.

Interested in understanding and fighting disinformation?
Propaganda, false characterizations, intentionally misleading messages, and outright lies threaten our democracy and even our lives. We can effectively combat disinformation, despite the well-funded machines that drive it. They may have money, but we have truth and we have people. People believe sources they trust. When we share and amplify unified, factual messages to those who trust us, we shift the narrative. When we do this by the thousands–we’re part of the Indivisible Truth Brigade.
The Indivisible Truth Brigade is an Indivisible National program to train activists on how to avoid spreading misinformation and how to counter it with effective messages that actually change minds.
The first new member orientation of 2025 is Wednesday at 3:30 pm. You can register here.
