Election News August 19 – Lean into the Joy!
Democratic National Convention week
This week’s Democratic National Convention promises to be a joyful celebration and essentially a huge rally for VP Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz. Invite yourself to the party and join them! And maybe invite some friends over to watch together!
The main programming will be from 5:30 or 6pm – 8pm Monday through Thursday. The formal speaking schedule hasn’t been announced but you can expect to hear former Presidents, (supposedly, Biden on Monday, Obama on Tuesday and Clinton on Wednesday) as well as rising Democratic stars, celebrities and music stars to bring energy to the event. Gov. Tim Walz will be speaking on Wednesday and Thursday will be the big night when VP Kamala Harris accepts the nomination.
You can watch some of it live on mainstream news channels or see it all on YouTube, Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, Twitch and through most streaming services. You can find the schedule here. The schedule will fill in with details as Monday approaches.
Let’s tap into all that energy and then use it to make history by electing the first Black, South Asian Woman President and create a Blue Trifecta so we can codify Roe, fix the Supreme Court, and pass the Voting Rights Act!!
Good News from Across the Country
On top of the excitement of the Convention, here are a couple of things to cheer as well!
- Wisconsin-ites had a primary this month and two great things happened:
- They resoundingly rejected a state constitutional amendment that would have stripped the governor’s power to independently spend federal emergency funds.
- They also had the highest turnout for an August primary in a presidential year since 1964. High turnout is always good for Democrats (when we vote, we win!) and that’s going to be really important in this swing state this year
- Arizona and Missouri this week joined a slew of states that will put abortion on the ballot for voters in November — and we KNOW this is a winning issue for Democrats in the post-Roe era.
