#TakeAction – March 9, 2020
Happy Monday! Here is how you can #TakeAction today, March 9th:
🔶 Call your WA Reps and Senators about two data privacy bills
🔶 Tell Congresswoman Schrier it’s time to end surprise medical bills
1) Action: Oppose SB 6280 and SB 6281 – Data Privacy, as passed
Call your WA Representatives and Senator. Thank your Representatives for passing significantly stronger bills. Ask your Senator to PRESERVE the improvements in the House bills and continue to STRENGTHEN the legislation.
SB 6280 covers law enforcement use of facial recognition. House improvements include a significantly stronger warrant requirement, and a new requirement for existing deployments to go on hold until an accountability report is filed.
SB 6281, the “Washington Privacy Act”, now has a private right of action; and (unlike the original Senate’s version) the Attorney General states it’s enforceable.
2) Action: Tell your Representative it’s time to end surprise medical bills. Call Congresswoman Schrier, tell her to end surprise medical bills for health services!
Every day, over 10,000 families in the United States receive a surprise medical bill. These bills happen when a person is charged for care from an out-of-network provider through no fault of their own. One-in-five emergency department visits and nearly 70% of air ambulance transports result in a surprise bill. Congress needs to act to protect patients, and in the process hold down health care costs for families and the health system overall.
The best way to do this is through “benchmarking,” which is the practice of paying providers the average amount they would ordinarily earn for providing a service in-network
