#TakeAction – March 3, 2020
It’s getting late to #TakeAction to ask the WA House Finance Committee to resurrect gun magazine capacity limits. And how about some letters to the editor to pass H.R.1 so government works for the people, not just rich folks with connections.
🔶 Limit high capacity magazines
🔶 Send a Letter to the Editor calling on the Senate to pass H.R. 1
Support HB 2947 – Limit high capacity magazines
Date: This is a bill “necessary to implement the budget”. It must pass the House and Senate by the end of the session, 12 March this year.
Action: Call your WA Representative on the Finance Committee this morning: Drew Stokesbary (LD31); Tina Orwall (LD33); Larry Springer (LD45). If your Representative is not on the Finance Committee, call and email the chair Gael Tarleton. Urge them to approve HB 2947 in the Finance Committee.
Background: HB 2947 would limit high-capacity magazines, which limits the number of deaths and injuries that a mass shooter can cause by providing a critical opportunity to intervene once a mass shooting has begun. This bill sets a reasonable limit for the capacity of magazines that can be sold or possessed in Washington state – 10 rounds. Nine other states have similar laws. This bill replaces HB 2240 which was buried under 120 Republican amendments and did not pass the House before the cut-off for this session. This new bill includes a magazine buyback program, which makes the bill eligible to be considered throughout the session as a budget bill. If a bill is deemed necessary to consider to complete the budget, it’s exempt from deadlines.
Send a Letter to the Editor calling on the Senate to pass H.R. 1
Action: Write a Letter to the Editor to call on Congress to pass the For the People Act (H.R.1), to make sure our elected officials, including President Trump, are working for us and not using our government to further their own personal interests. Start here: https://declarationforamericandemocracy.org/
Background: Watching Donald Trump get off scot-free was a sad moment for our democracy. Now we need to focus on what we can do to repair our democracy. The House has already passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a major pro-democracy bill, but Republicans in the Senate refuse to bring it up for a vote. That’s where you come in. Our friends at the Declaration for American Democracy have put together a helpful Letter to the Editor tool that you can use to raise this important issue with your local newspapers.
